1. Cut a piece of lino to the size of your photograph - in this example, the photograph is 15x10cm. 2. Study your photograph and trace its outlines onto tracing paper with a pencil. You may wish to use masking tape to hold the paper in place. Focus on the most important elements of the photograph and simplify the design if there is a lot of detail.

What is Lino Printing? What is Lino Printing? Lino printing, a traditional relief printmaking method also called lino cutting, involves carving a design into a linoleum block. The raised, uncarved surface is inked with a brayer and pressed onto paper or fabric using a baren, enabling the creation of multiple copies, or editions, of the artwork.

1. How to choose the right lino for your prints. There are several products on sale for lino printing described as 'easy' or 'soft' lino. I only ever work with grey or brown 'artist' or 'traditional' linos. Traditional lino is a blend of cork and wood flour mixed with linseed oil and pressed onto a hessian backing.
